Like Shoes On A Dog
Characters must be uncomfortable, forced to problem-solve for 90% of the story.
The only time a character is not struggling, growing, striving or in trouble, is before the inciting incident (though quite often the struggle has already begun, our character just doesn’t realize it), and/or after the final battle has been waged, love found, the villain vanquished, the world saved…
Don’t let characters off the hook. Give them the chance to triumph by writing them into unimaginable corners…like shoes on a dog. They'll learn to run in a whole new way.
